What Is The "List N"?
If you’ve been shopping for disinfecting cleaning products, you’ve likely come across a mention of "List N." This list serves to identify the disinfectant products that have been proven to kill SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). The N list was launched by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in March 2020 as a means to provide the public with a reliable database they can refer to when searching for products that effectively protect against the spread of COVID-19.
The list began as a spread sheet, but evolved into a searchable online database where the public can easily search for products, officially known as List N: Disinfectants for Coronavirus (COVID-19).
How to search for a disinfecting product on the EPA’s list N
The EPA assesses the chemical compounds used in disinfectant products. Because of this, the product and company name may not match since the chemical compounds can be sold under different brand names. You can use the EPA registration number from the package label to search for a specific product on the N list database website by entering the first two sets of numbers into the registration number search field and clicking “submit” on the form.
